I instead bought a Guild S-300 that hung next to it in the wood and glass display cabinet. You bought it a week before I had enough to take it home. In about 1980 I was saving my money to buy it. BTW - I remember your silverburst Les Paul. The rumor posted is disgusting and slanderous and I hope you retract it. I checked on them frequently in their little two bedroom steel prefab home on Cumnor in Glen Ellyn. The musician community came out in force and through a benefit jam night that raised over $5k. They were left nearly penniless when the store closed. I helped pack and sweep the store along with twenty other local musicians who owed their love and pursuit of music in large part to the Burkes. The store closed because the building was sold and the landlord doubled the rent. NOTHING COULD BE FARTHER FROM THE TRUTH! I worked there. You'd think "I could buy the parts and assemble myself a strat for half that or less." I remember when new American-made strats hit $500 retail, and it felt kind of like a slap in the face. Back then, the very notion of any electric guitar having a price tag of $1000US made people laugh out loud for minutes on end until their faces were red and streaked with tears the "thousand dollar guitar" became a frequent punch line behind glass counters. It doesn't sound like that much now, but that was a lot of middle-class money in the 80s to ask your parents for, even if it was used. I remember seeing $375 used LP Customs with the case. I do remember seeing the $400 and $500 new Les Pauls, as someone recalled. When we got older, one of us in the band might have a car or access to a car and drive us all when we weren't rehearsing. My friends and I would ride our bikes to visit as many as we could after school or on a Saturday morning and stay there looking at stuff for an hour or two. We didn't have CG or nationwide chains by us back in those days. You got to know which 4 or 5 shops around town always had lots of new and used good stuff (those became my favorites), and which 4 or 5 shops that usually carried crap, with maybe one used 335 or a Jazzmaster that some guy traded in on a sax or something, kept behind the counter, out of reach, and priced so high no 13-yr-old kid could ever afford it, even if they wanted it.īut the better shops were fun to visit. Some places would put the brand name logos of stuff they carried in the phone book, some didn't. I don't have any great stories as such, but as mentioned, I do remember having to look through the yellow pages for music stores as an adolescent kid in the early 80s.
